Boys demonstrate an increase in avoidance from age 5 to 9, whereas girls show an increase until age 7. Consistent with the results from Aubry et al. (1999), this suggests that developmental changes in sex-typing may be mostly reflected in children's avoidance of opposite-sex activities. It is possible, however, that the small number of items used in this study was not sufficient to detect the expansion of same-sex interests that might occur with age (e.g., make-up, sports).
