Although the data are not entirely consistent, patients who are younger, female, who undergo more severe or invasive treatments, or experience prolonged caregiving requirements or psychological distress, may experience higher rates of relationship dysfunction. Relationships that are designated as unsatisfactory early on in the cancer trajectory are clearly at risk for future dysfunction.
