Definition Of Depression

Depression is defined through the DSM-IV as the presence of depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure in nearly all activities for a period of at least 2 weeks.2 The individual must also have four of the additional symptoms presented in Table 1. They include symptoms that can be conceptualized as encompassing somatic (e.g., weight/appetite, fatigue) and cognitive (e.g., poor concentration, guilt) changes from normal functioning that result in significant distress or impairment.
