Some programs recommend only one exercise per muscle group. Others recommend as many as four or five exercises per muscle group. The best way to choose the proper number of exercises is according to your level of experience. The other important consideration is the amount of time you have. You should never perform more exercises than you can fit into a 45 - 60 minute workout. With that in mind, three or four exercises per muscle is usually the upper limit and that's for advanced trainees and bodybuilders.
If you're a beginner, you'll be starting with just one exercise. As an intermediate, you'll do two exercises, and ultimately, you may do as many as three or four - seldom more.
