The Nervous System

Starting from the superiority of PPT over ESRT in diagnosing neurological disorders (Table 7.2c), we should reconsider the topic of migraine since so many patients seek relief for this symptom through acupuncture.

In Chapter 5 we compared the sensitization of the ear in migraine and tension-type headache (TTH) (see Fig. 5.27). Applying ESRT to both groups of patients we can see that patients with migraine show the already well known cluster of points on the colon area (on the left of Fig. 7.6) whereas

The colored sectors correspond to a significantly higher concentration of points, respectively, for ESRT vs. PPT on the left side or for PPT vs. ESRT on the right side of the figure. Colored areas = lateral surface; blank areas = medial surface.

patients with TTH show a significantly higher number of points with reduced ESR on sector 20 (Shen men area) and 17 (muscles of the lumbothoracic tract) (on the right of Fig. 7.6). In addition, sectors 7, 8 and 9, comprehending both the brainstem area and part of the Chinese spleen on the inferior concha, show a higher concentration of points in patients with TTH: the difference with the migraine group is only just below significance (P = 0.065).

The parallel comparisons of PPT and ESRT may also offer us indications for treatment: migraine could be preferentially treated with points of the antitragus, and the upper concha, whereas TTH could be controlled using points of the Shen men area, the lower concha and the brainstem.
