In summary, when you meet young patients in your clinic remember what they want from you as a professional (Table 7). Remember to be empathic, respectful, and non-judgmental. Listen more than you talk. Be patient— teenagers may need further consultations before they trust you enough to open up. Assure confidentiality to the young person, and ensure they understand what it means in practice. Consider seeing or at least preparing to see the young person by themselves as well as with their parents. Be yourself and maintain appropriate boundaries, providing an emotionally and physically safe environment. Consider using interview tools to address the important psychosocial aspects of health, for example, HEADDSS (48,49). If you practice these principles, you are likely to soon experience enhanced job satisfaction and become enthused by adolescent rheumatology health care!
