The concept of family has evolved over time. Today there is a huge diversity of family structures/organizations and contexts (cultural, religious, socioeconomic, etc.). Moreover, the way we were brought up may influence the way we deal with family issues. Family connectedness, family role models, family concern for the well-being of the child and autonomy at home are all identified factors that foster resilience in young people and should be encouraged and affirmed (1), especially during adolescence. Conversely, lack of parental support at this time has been associated with negative outcomes, for example, greater nonadherence to medication (2). This chapter will address the issues surrounding the parenting of adolescents with chronic rheumatic conditions from both a theoretical and a practical viewpoint.
