A well recognized high-risk factor for cardiovascular, neurovascular, and renal disease is systemic arterial hypertension (40,47). Research over the past several decades has revealed that coronary heart disease, a major cause of morbidity and mortality in adults, may begin in adolescence. Research is now looking at prevention of adult disorders by preventing or effectively managing disorders in adolescents that may become serious problems in the adult population. Thus, adolescents should be screened for coronary heart disease, looking for such factors as obesity, hypertension, cigarette use, hyperlipidemia, and lack of exercise. The importance of such screening in SLE is discussed in Chapter 8.
