Sports foster many lifelong essential skills and qualities including independence, teamwork, socialization, coordination, determination, self-worth, and a healthy lifestyle and should be enjoyed by all. Unfortunately, injury has become a common problem due to overuse and intense sport participation in many adolescent athletes. Recognition and education regarding youth injuries are important to prevent further and future injury. The National Institutes of Health web site carries multiple patient handouts for sports injury prevention (www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ sportsinjuries.html) Prevention strategies focusing on rules, proper technique, education, and societal awareness of injury need to be implemented so that sports can continue to be a fun and integral part of every adolescent's life.
