Systemic lupus erythematosus is a relatively rare autoimmune disease, which may present during adolescence. This disease can be severe, involving multiple organ systems, and the treatments required for disease control have potential side effects and long-term toxicity as well. The development of a disease such as SLE during adolescence is a challenge to the healthy social development of the adolescent, and the involvement of a supportive multidisciplinary pediatric rheumatology team is important in assisting the adolescent and his/her family.
