Pain conditions may present insidiously or acutely. Often in adolescents they follow a mild injury, operative procedure, or illness. Pains that would be expected to subside become more intrusive and disabling. In some cases these lead to severe pain associated disability and significant reduction of quality of life.
It is important to identify young people who are developing signs and symptoms attributable to a chronic pain syndrome as early as possible. This allows appropriate multidisciplinary intervention and rehabilitation.
