It is widely recognized that early assessment, targeted investigations, and multidisciplinary rehabilitation is key for returning these adolescents back to a more appropriate lifestyle.
The assessment should take place in a suitable environment and appropriate time set aside. Ideally a member of the multidisciplinary team should also be present. Several studies have shown that it is important to have key family members present during the assessment and periods of therapy. Parents' anxiety and perception of their child's disability has a direct effect on rehabilitation and the child's view of his/her condition.
