How to get ripped abs
A well-functioning abdominal musculature unloads the back stress during lifting and stabilizes the spinal column, because the abdominal muscles are antagonists to the back muscles. The back muscles are always used during lifting, standing, and sitting. In the majority of people, abdominal muscles are weaker than back muscles. Strong abdominal muscles, hip flexors (iliopsoas, rectus femoris), and back extensors are very important for all sports. There are four abdominal muscles (Table 12-9 and Fig. 12-20).
The mesomorph could probably follow any nutrient ratio and still get results. I know some mesomorphs on the 50 - 50 diet 50 McDonalds and 50 pizza. They still grow muscle like weeds and have ripped abs. I'm not endorsing this approach, just making a point. If our gifted mesomorph friend would go with 50-55 carbohydrates, 30 protein and 15-20 fat, he would get even better results.
D., 36 years old, was a professional longdistance runner. Five years ago she had surgery because of Achilles tendinitis in the left heel. It took 2 years for her to recover to the point of resuming training, but the muscles of her left leg had developed a tendency toward delayed-onset muscle soreness She would feel pain in the lower left abdominal muscles just above the inguinal ligament while running downhill. The routine screening examination revealed that she felt this pain whenever she overextended the left leg. Further examination revealed sensitive and sore areas on the left quadriceps muscles. The treatment included systemic needling of the primary homeostatic acu-reflex points, as well as the symptomatic acu-reflex points on the lower back, hip abductor, and iliopsoas muscles to relieve hip stress. Symptomatic treatment focused on quadriceps, hamstring muscles, adductor muscles, the iliotibial band, and rectus abdominis muscles.
It is also common to administer retinoids by ip injection (e.g., 33). Animals are anesthetized and placed on their backs on a wet towel. A 27-gage needle is used to make a puncture through the skin and abdominal muscles into the ip cavity of each animal, a few millimeters anterior to one hindlimb and lateral to the midline. The volume of solution containing the desired dose to tRA is then injected into the abdomen with a Hamilton microsyringe using the previously made puncture hole. tRA percipitates at the injection site, being visible through the skin as a yellow mass, and gradually dissipates over the next 24-48 h. Animals are returned to their water as soon as possible. Control animals are injected with an equal amount of DMSO. This method tends to induce some mortality among the animals, since DMSO injected into the peritoneum is very unpleasant for the liver.

Another potential late complication of gastric bypass surgery is a hernia. This does not generally happen if a person has had a laparoscopic procedure. A hernia is really a tear in an abdominal muscle with a loop of bowel (intestine) poking through. It is most likely to occur following a surgical procedure that involves a large abdominal incision. We worry about hernias because sometimes the intestine gets stuck outside the abdominal muscle. In such a case the loop of bowel gets cut off from its blood supply and can literally die. In general, if you have a hernia you can see or feel it. Sometimes an incisional hernia will require corrective surgery, or sometimes your surgeon will opt to just follow it closely.

Use dull or small toothed forceps to lift the exposed abdominal muscles away from body, and then with care use scissors to make a small midline, longitudinal opening in the muscle wall. Use an index finger or blunt instrument to ensure that the abdominal organs are not adhered to the muscle wall before extending the incision rostrally and caudally about the same extent as the overlying skin layer was opened. 9. ABDOMINAL MUSCLE STRAIN Spreading between the ribs and the pelvis, the anterior abdominal wall muscles encase the internal organs and hold them in place. These muscles also act to support the trunk and lower back and to assist movement. There are three layers of abdominal muscle. The deepest layer is the transversus abdominis, whose fibers run approximately horizontally. The middle layer is the internal oblique muscle, whose fibers are crossed by the outermost layer, the external oblique muscle. Overlying these three layers is the rectus abdominis muscle, which runs vertically on either side of the middle line of the abdomen. Abdominal muscle strain is caused by overstretching or tearing of muscle fibers during sudden and violent movement of the trunk or trauma to the region. The energy requirements of an individual vary with age, sex, body composition, physical activity, and stress. In the normal adult at basal state, approximately 75 of energy requirements reflect the energy needs of major organs (brain, 20 skeletal muscle, 18-22 abdominal muscles, 25 and heart, 11 ). However, during normal daily activity the total energy requirement and the proportion of energy needed by different tissues may vary considerably. For example, with exercise the energy requirement of skeletal muscles increases, and during a meal the abdominal organs require more energy for the process of digestion and absorption. Children require additional energy for growth.
For example, when treating low-back pain, the lumbar muscles, gluteal muscles, hamstring muscles, calf muscles, hip flexor muscles, abdominal muscles, iliotibial band, pectoral muscles, and even neck muscles can be treated in the same session. The same procedure can be repeated in subsequent sessions until complete healing is achieved. The same needling procedure will also be effective with asymptomatic healthy persons for preventing low-back, hip, and neck problems.
The iliac crest provides attachment for the hip flexors, the abdominal muscles, and the muscles that rotate the hip. Direct impact on the iliac crest can cause contusion, bruising, and inflammation of tissue or even bone fracture. Severe pain can be felt after the injury happens.
This is an abnormally increased inward curvature of the lumbar spine. In this condition the pelvis tilts forward and as the back is hollow, the abdomen and buttocks protrude and the knees may be hyperextended. Typical problems associated with this condition are tightening of the back muscles followed by a weakening of the abdominal muscles. Hamstring problems are common because of the anterior tilt of the pelvis. Increased weight gain or pregnancy may cause or exacerbate this condition.
Restoring mobility makes a stiffer segment less vulnerable to physical assault, although strengthening weakened intrinsic muscles must be the final step in the rehabilitation process. (Note strengthening the abdominal muscles is the first step.) Remember, whenever spinal strengthening starts it makes your back sore (see Chapter 7) but being aware of this at the outset should dissuade you from taking fright and repairing to your bed. Getting it right with treatment is all about getting the rate right.
Dry needling acupuncture is very effective in alleviating this condition, but healing may take a long time. Fine needles should be used directly on the pubic symphysis, and normal needles should be used on surrounding muscles, including the abdominal muscles, hip flexors, adductors, and iliotibial band. Two treatment sessions per week should be provided.
Alcohol, drugs, including some prescription drugs, cigarettes, and excessive caffeine (more than 2 to 3 cups coffee) should be avoided to minimize the risk of conditions such as low birth weight, sudden-death syndrome, retarded growth, hyperactivity, attention deficit disorder, and emotional problems of the child.
